August Progress Update
over 1 year ago – Wed, Aug 09, 2023 at 08:32:25 AM

Hey everyone!

Artwork

The last month has been incredibly productive for Wyrmlings. According to my progress tracker spreadsheet, we're 90% done with the art commissions, with just about every piece remaining currently in progress. Here are a few of my favorites:

The wyrmlings, guided by the Dragonsdale Dragon School sports coaches (a two-headed giant named Ed and Murgrog the Destroyer), chase down a "trackberry muffin" that is wreaking havoc on the soccer field.
Adventure banner for "Muffin but Trouble" - in which the wyrmlings must track down and eat some enchanted muffins that the local baker accidentally created when his mind wandered while using magical ingredients (and don't worry, the muffins aren't really alive. It's just the magic playing tricks).
A tree in the swamp is struck by lightning in an intense thunderstorm
Adventure banner for "The Druid's Jealousy" - in which the wyrmlings find and talk down Thunderclaw, an ex-student who has lost control of his storm magic.
A dragon made of wood and leaves and vines. Red crystals form eyes, horns, teeth, and claws.
The Oakdrake, an adversary in the end-of-year finale adventure trilogy by Steph Campbell. When defeated, the wyrmlings might find themselves with a cute new friend!
A warm brown humanoid dragon without wings stands holding a staff. He has wooden antlers and wears dark brown robes. His magic grows leafy vines around him and his staff.
Sorrel is a dragon wizard from the distant past who found himself trapped in a crystal tree. What his motives, plans, and allegiances are I'll leave a mystery until you play the end-of-year adventures!

Layout

Meanwhile, I've been working on getting layout done parallel with receiving artwork for the book sections. This means layout is also mostly done (at least for the digital edition), although there's still a decent amount of work left for me to finish up.

BackerKit Survey Reminder

If you haven't yet filled out your BackerKit survey, please do so soon! If you're a backer at the Dragon level or above, I won't be able to include your name in the book unless the survey is filled out in the next week or two. Backers who don't complete their survey also won't be able to have physical copies shipped to them as I will not have an address or a way to collect shipping costs.

Three wyrmlings pose for a friendly group hug portrait
A piece of "fan art" that the artist behind the majority of the new work (Urdilinya Smith) has graciously allowed me to use.

That's all for now! If you have questions about the game or want a place to discuss with others, I have a forum channel set up in the Lone Colossus Discord server just for that and I'd love to see you there.

Thanks for all your support,

Josh

July Update: New Art and Layout Progress
over 1 year ago – Fri, Jul 07, 2023 at 07:29:12 AM

Hey everyone!

It's the start of a new month and that means it's time for an update. Over the course of June I've gotten in a few finished art commissions, finalized all the text, and made some progress on layout.

New Art

Thanks to all the Expanded Adventure stretch goals you unlocked, each adventure is getting a piece of banner art depicting a scene from the adventure! Below are the banners for the introductory/tutorial adventures (written by Michael Low), Water Bus Blues and First Day of School!!

A giant sits in a mountain pass, damming a river and forming an enormous lake. A tiny ship sails across the lake toward the giant.
Banner for "Water Bus Blues"

In Water Bus Blues, the wyrmlings take a ferry - the Flapjack Ferry to be precise - to Dragonsdale to begin Dragon School. Of course, not everything goes smoothly, and their adventures begin before they've even arrived!

Four wyrmlings play a sport on a long dirt playing field consisting of various terrain including small ponds, a stream, small hills, rocks, and ridges. Around the playing field is a mountain meadow, which itself forms the valley of several lush, nearby mountains.
Banner for "First Day of School!!"

Once the wyrmlings finally get to school, it's time to learn about their powers. Plus, they find out more about a mysterious stranger from part 1, setting up the campaign to come.

Layout

I've continued to play around with fonts and layout and think I've reached something a little more satisfying than what's in the quickstart guide. The biggest change is the font for the read-aloud portions of adventures, which I found slightly hard to read. I've also lightened the background, which should further help with readability. All in all, I think it's coming along nicely, although there are still some graphical elements I'd like to change up.

Current layout spread for the start of the second intro adventure, "First Day of School!". The banner is at the top, with the title of the adventure in a box that slightly overlaps with the banner. After that, the adventure starts.

Other Stuff

Most of you have filled out your surveys on BackerKit, but there are still ~15% that haven't yet done so. Please try to do it as swiftly as you can to make the fulfillment process as smooth and simple as possible when we get there. Plus, it really helps me to get final counts for items sooner rather than later :)

I'll continue sharing art on social media as it comes in! If you'd like to see it, you can follow me on Facebook and/or Instagram. If you want to talk about Wyrmlings or other TTRPGs, I'd love to see you in the Lone Colossus Discord as well!

Thanks again for all your support!

BackerKit Survey Smoke Test
over 1 year ago – Tue, Jun 13, 2023 at 08:06:42 AM

Hey everyone!

It's been a bit over 2 weeks since the Kickstarter ended, and funds have arrived in my account. That means A) I've started commissioning new pieces of artwork for the book, and B) it's time to get BackerKit surveys sent out! A "smoke test" of about 5% of all surveys has just been sent, and assuming no glaring issues arise with these surveys surveys for everyone else will be going out in a few days.

If you haven't used BackerKit before, it's a pledge management system that allows you to upgrade your pledge, select add-ons, and pay shipping and taxes. Since shipping rates can change, I won't charge cards for any expenses in BackerKit until we get closer to shipping time (likely when the book goes to print later this year).

If you have any issues with your survey please start by contacting BackerKit's support - they should be able to expediently handle most issues. If there's something they can't resolve, they'll inform you on how best to contact me for those special cases.

Artwork

If you've been following me on social media, you might have seen this piece already, but I recently got the final version for Doc Broc, the main adversary from the adventure The Vegetable Villain Steals Lunch, and I think he just looks incredible.

A tall, thin human-like man stands in a regal pose. He wears deep purple robes that fade to light green at the edges and look like they might be made of lettuce. Atop his head sits a crown of broccoli, and in his hand he weilds a leek staff. He has a long, white beard and his skin is a pea-green. Green magic swirls around his off-hand and the head of his staff.

I'll keep sharing artwork here as pieces come in, but if you want to be the first to see them, consider following me on Instagram or Facebook (@LoneColossusGames) where I regularly share any new artwork for my projects in addition to other updates and announcements.

Thanks again for all your support!

Cute Kickstarter and Reminder to Check Payment Methods
over 1 year ago – Tue, May 30, 2023 at 06:09:40 AM

Hey everyone!

While we wait for the Kickstarter funds to come in, and for BackerKit surveys to be prepared, a couple dozen of you will have gotten emails from Kickstarter requesting that you update your payment method. This usually happens if a card is expired or was otherwise unable to be charged. You'll have until THIS Thursday, June 1st, to update your payment information, after which Kickstarter will cancel your pledge. If you're unable to get it sorted out before then, you can contact me and I'll help you get your pledge added back in through BackerKit.

Another Cute Kickstarter

It’s not easy being small. But it helps to have a big heart.

A mouse weilding a sewing needle sword and an acorn cap shield stands in a heroic pose. Behind it are a squirrel tossing an acorn and a bat wrapping itself in its wings.

Occasionally I come across a project that's so clearly of interest to my own project's backers that I just have to share it. Luncheons and Dragonflies is one of these. It's a cute TTRPG about tiny woodland mammals from the publisher of the Those Who Wander TTRPG that runs on a four-sided dice system (which, as they say, are perfect for tiny critter paws). The system boasts quick character creation and dice stealing, trading, and lending between characters.

They're close to funded, with 15 days left to go. If they make it to their first stretch goal, softcover print on demand will be made available to all PDF backers.

Thanks again for your support of Wyrmlings, and keep an eye out for another update with more details about BackerKit surveys in a week or two!

319% Funded!
over 1 year ago – Thu, May 25, 2023 at 08:33:09 AM

Thank you all so much for the incredible support during this campaign - especially over the last two days in which we very nearly broke through the final stretch goal! I also want to call out the last backer who I saw get their pledge in with 30 seconds to spare, bringing us to a nice round 500 backers ^^

Because we got so close to the final stretch goal, I'm going to unlock a portion of it, adding one more adventure, written by Leon, to the book.

The wyrmling brigade strikes a victory pose!

Next Steps

Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be continuing to work on preparing Wyrmlings for release. Including the stretch goals there are 5 more adventures to be written, along with a fair amount of art to commission.

Backers who pledged at the Loremaster tier or higher will also be getting an email from me asking for their character descriptions and some guidelines for characters in the near future.

I'll be using BackerKit for the pledge manager, so once the funds have cleared from Kickstarter in about two weeks you can expect an update about BackerKit surveys. For backers who pledged at the Dragon tier and higher, this is where I'll be asking for the name you want in the book.

Once the surveys are sent out, you'll have the chance to change your pledge and adjust your add-ons as you like.

Keep in Touch!

Although I'll be making all important announcements via Kickstarter updates, it's a less personal way to communicate. If you want to come hang out and talk about Wyrmlings or other TTRPGs, you can join my Discord server where there's a forum devoted to Wyrmlings discussion (among other topics).

If you want to stay up to date on all the things I do (mostly D&D 5e supplements, although I also occasionally release new systems like Wyrmlings), my mailing list is a good place to be as well :)

Thanks again for all your support for Wyrmlings, and I'm excited to share more adorable art with you as commissions happen!
